Description: Understanding audience needs, project goals, aesthetics, interactivity and media impacts, usability and user experience, and technical wizardry are essential components to media design.  Yet these are not enough.  Innovation and creativity in small detail and big picture concepts drive outstanding media design.  Creativity is viewed as un-teachable or beyond the scope of the curriculum. However, creativity is an essential practice for almost all media design roles.  Throughout this class students will participate in a wide range of individual and group design improve experiences which encourage them to take risks and think creatively.  Students then apply these abilities to interactive media experience and game design.  Design improv experiences will occur in many forms throughout the semester, including drawing, writing, montage, role-play, creative collaboration, paper prototyping, and game design.  Activities will include a mix of individual and group improvisational design. Students are expected to attend lecture-discussions, participate in weekly "jam" sessions, complete weekly design projects, and develop and refine a design document for a game or other interactive project.  Class examples will focus primarily on video games, but the activities, processes, and projects are applicable to all media design.
